FIFA World Cup Qualifier: Slovakia Loses to Slovenia 0-2

Slovakia’s national football team on Saturday lost a home qualifying match at the Tehelne Pole or Brick Field stadium against Slovenia 2-0 and has complicated the situation regarding qualification to the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The Slovak team has retained its first place in the Group 3, but if Slovenia defeats San Marino as expected this coming Wednesday, Coach Vladimir Weiss’s team will have to win in Poland in order to avoid play-offs for South Africa in November. At the same time, Weiss will have to get along without several members of the usual starting lineup, who were booked during the game against Slovenia.

Final Agreement on the Consolidation Package is Still not Approved

The final form of an ambitious package of fiscal consolidation for the next year amounting to EUR 1.7 billion remains elusive even after Tuesday’s negotiations of leaders of four centre-right governing coalition parties. The question remains open of a possible increase in the value-added tax rate, which was mentioned as one of the alternatives. Prime Minister Iveta Radicova wants to thoroughly contemplate and calculate all the possible alternatives before she gives a definite answer.
