Moratorium Before VUC Election Round 2 Begins

The campaign before Saturday‘s second round of the Higher Territorial Unit (VUCs) elections has ended, with an election moratorium now in place. Campaign activities are banned 48 hours before the beginning of voting and on election day. The elections of regional governors will begin at 7 a.m. on Saturday, November 28 in Bratislava, Trencin, Banska Bystrica and Presov regions. In the remaining four regions, governors were elected in the first round of the elections on November 14.

Final Agreement on the Consolidation Package is Still not Approved

The final form of an ambitious package of fiscal consolidation for the next year amounting to EUR 1.7 billion remains elusive even after Tuesday’s negotiations of leaders of four centre-right governing coalition parties. The question remains open of a possible increase in the value-added tax rate, which was mentioned as one of the alternatives. Prime Minister Iveta Radicova wants to thoroughly contemplate and calculate all the possible alternatives before she gives a definite answer.
