Danube Wings Opens Route to Venice

From April 2012 Slovak air carrier Danube Wings will fly from Bratislava and Kosice to Venice three times a week. The new route will be operated in cooperation with Italian carrier Megaride Air making use of support it receives from Venice airport and from local administration and businesses.

6.66 Pct of Slovak Population in Material Need in January

The number of people eligible for benefits in material need as of late January increased by 70 from a month ago to 185,300. According to the figures presented by the Central Office of Labour, Social Affairs and Family, the number of beneficiaries dropped by 4,600 in annual terms.

Unemployment Rate Soared to 13.69 Percent in January

The unemployment rate based on the number of registered jobless people grew to 13.69 percent, in January according to data from the Slovak Labour Office. It was the highest level since June 2004 when it reached 13.91 percent. The number of jobseekers able to take up a job immediately stood at slightly over 369,000 people.

Doctors Want More Money

A few thousanddoctors working in outpatient facilities are revoking their contracts with insurers and preparing protests while those in hospitals want a further pay rise. Doctors plan a series of protests inApril. Leader of the Opposition, the Outgoing Prime Minister and the President Are the Most Trusted Slovak Politicians

Chairman of the strongest opposition party Robert Fico enjoys the highest credibility among Slovak politicians with as much as 37.1 percent of people considering him a serious politician. This is the result of a recent poll done by MVK agency. Outgoing Prime Minister Iveta Radičová placed second with 18.2 percent, while President Ivan Gašparovič was third in the most trusted trio with 14.3 percent.

Economy Minister: Slovak Legislation Works Without ACTA

The much disputed Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) in its current form brings no effective and positive changes towards better intellectual property protection but only repression, said Slovak Economy Minister Juraj Miskov at a discussion this Monday. Head of Financial Administration Igor Krnáč Dismissed

Finance Minister Ivan Mikloš on Monday dismissed head of the Financial Administration Igor Krnáč, the minister told a news conference. Mikloš dismissed Igor Krnáč as of 20 February and appointed customs section director general Maria Machova as his replacement. Furthermore, acting director of the Competence Centre of Financial Operations Miroslav Mikulcik will also lose his post.
